Author's Note: I wrote this piece because a lot of people don't think that Pewaukee Girls basketball isn't capable of winning tournaments without the help of "good" refs. This tournament had horrible refs, and the main reason for this anecdote was to proove that our team is perfectly fine without things going our way.
A couple weeks ago, our basketball league was completed. Now this weekend, we had our league tournament to finish up. Our team had a pretty interesting time at the tournament, and good things came out of all of our hard work.
At 8:00 in the morning, I was already on my way to Waukesha West High School to warm up for our first game against Oak Creek. My teammates and I aren't the best team when we have to get up early for a game, but sometimes we end up doing good anyways. Oak Creek isn't one of our favorite teams to play against for many reasons. Well, they are an easy team to beat anyways, and we ended up winning, so we went to the next round.
The next team that we played an hour later was New Berlin West -- another team that we do not like to play. This team was really easy to beat, but definitely harder than some of the other teams. There was this one girl that was really making me mad; she was #14 and she is one of the most devious little people that I have ever met. The referees that were reffing our game were probably some of the worst refs that I have ever played with too, and they were not calling any fouls. So this girl would be like totally hacking us, and it was really dumb. We ended up winning anyways, and I was ready to move on past that girl.
The championship game -- full of excitement, and the stands are filled with worried parents. That is exactly what this game was full of. Once again, we were playing our biggest competition -- Arrowhead -- and we were scared, but yet confident at the same time. About halfway through the second quarter, we were losing 12-3, but somehow we totally picked it up after halftime and they started freaking out. They turned the ball over a lot, and were just running all over the place not knowing what to do. The game was now at our pace, and we were going to dominate.
In the third quarter, we were playing at our best level. We had the same refs as in the last game, so they weren't calling fouls at all. We were taking the ball away, and clearly fouling everywhere, but it didn't get called. I was guarding this girl named Becca (Jamiy Lynn Spears) and she was dribbling the ball towards me. Thinking agressive like everybody else, I stole the ball away from her and started dribbling up the court for a lay-up. This girl is like super super super fast, so she catches up to me and completely pushed me down. I literally did a flip in the air and landed directly on my hip.
Even though Becca is a good basketball player, she is also a nice person. After she realized what she had done, when I was walking back to the bench she came up to me and apologized. It was really sweet of her to do because nobody else on their team probably wouldn't have done that. There was this other girl, #32, who Natalie, Erin, and I hate so much that we wanted to like hurt her BAD. So she stole the ball from somebody, and was running up the court for a lay-up. Natalie sprints down the court as fast as she can and totally smacks the ball right out of her hands when she is trying to shoot. Of course, the foul was called on Natalie, but once she blocked the shot, #32 pushed Natalie out of her way and Natalie flew into the bleachers. Luckily some parents were sitting on the bottom row because otherwise she would have smashed her head into them.
We were on the verge of catching up, and in the fourth quarter we were winning! And guess what? Our team won the game! It was going to be out last time playing Arrowhead this year and we wanted to beat them so bad. The final score was 47-37 I think, but all I know is that we won by ten points. After the game, the whole team went to Bubba's except for Erin and Jayla because Erin had to go to her brother's basketball game and Jayla lives really far away from Pewaukee. That weekend was really fun, and hopefully we will meet up with Arrowhead sometime again next year.
Where is that picture from? That's so embarrasing. You should put a picture of me now under it, to show the difference. Anyway, nice writing, that was so awesome that we won!
